In recent years more awareness has been given to the importance of proper concussion management. High profile cases have highlighted how critical it is to ensure complete recovery before returning to activity. Many health care professionals now recommend baseline testing for individuals involved in sports to increase the effectiveness of concussion management.
How is Base Line Testing Done?
The most recent international consensus statement on concussion in sport advocates use of the SCAT2 (Sport Concussion Assessment Tool). This test evaluates balance, cognitive performance, memory, comprehension, and recognition. In addition to this we also use the BESS (Balance Error Scoring System) test to further examine postural stability. The results of these tests are kept on file.
Following any incident resulting in concussive systems these tests are repeated to determine if there are any deficiencies. This is a valuable tool in determining when an athlete can safely return to play.
